1925 Impressionist Oil On Canvas by Willem Knip, Saint-Tropez - Laren School
A large, original oil on canvas by Willem Knip (1883-1967). Entitled "Stil Water" it depicts the coastal town of St Tropez in France. It is signed W. A. Knip, 25 (1925).
This wonderful Dutch Impressionist seascape is housed in its original gilt frame. The rear bears remnants of a label announcing Knip's death, dated 1967. It also states the title "Stil Water", the location "St Tropez", reiterates the artist name and further illegible details in pencil.
The warm palette, free brushstrokes and atmospheric composition display Knip's enormous skill. It is in good condition, with minor signs of age.
Biography:
Willem Alexander Knip (1883–1967) was a leading painter of the Laren School. He initially trained as a decorative artist at the Quellinius School in Amsterdam and spent a period working in Chris Lebeau’s studio. Seeking to free himself from decorative stylistic influences, he moved to the Gooi region around 1900, where he developed a refined Impressionist approach. Travels to Paris, and later to Italy and Spain, brought a lighter, more airy quality to his palette. He favoured subjects such as landscapes, harbours, and townscapes. His work is held in several collections, including the Singer Laren museum.
