Large Original Signed 1963 Linocut "Palm House" By Edward Bawden RA
A large and impressive original framed linocut print entitled "Palm House" by Edward Bawden R.A, circa 1963.
One of fifty documented artist's proofs, it is signed, titled and numbered 18/50 by hand. It is listed in Jeremy Greenwood's catalogue raisonné, "Edward Bawden: Editioned Prints", MG 62.
It depicts the Victorian Palm House greenhouse at Kew gardens, in bold geometry with striking composition and palette. The original Zwemmer Gallery label is affixed to the rear of the glazed frame.
One of Bawden's largest works, it would have been impossible to press using conventional methods. Bawden was known to lay his paper and lino plate down on the floor and invite friends to dance upon it to create the image. The very heavy ink attests to this unusual method of printing, and adds to the vividness of the image.
It is in good condition, with rejuvenated frame and border. The thick linocut ink is bold and unfaded. The signature and title are somewhat faded due to light exposure.
