Two Roorkhee Safari Campaign Chairs Vintage 1920 Leather Wood
  • Pair of Vintage Roorkhee Safari Campaign Chairs Circa 1920

    £1,200.00Price

A pair of early 20th century "Roorkhee" campaign chairs in dark hardwood and tobacco-coloured leather.

Named after the headquarters of the Indian Army Corps at Roorkhee, India circa 1898, this kind of portable chair was used by British officers not only in India but during the Boer wars and World War I.

The Roorkhee campaign chair influenced many modernist designers of the 20th century, including Marcel Breuer (the Wassily chair), Le Corbusier (the Basculant Chair), Wilhelm Bofinger (the Farmer's Chair), Vico Magistretti (the 905 Armchair ) and of course Kaare Klint's famous Safari chair.

These chairs are in good vintage condition with some signs of age. There is a minor repair to one arm strap and a replacement strap to the underside. The leather has been reconditioned, the wood cleaned and polished.

They are offered as a pair. Please contact us if you wish to purchase only one.
